EP12 - Community regeneration at La Junquera

09/09/2025

The final episode of Season 1 of Rooted to Earth is now live!

Episode 12 takes us to La Junquera, in southeastern Spain, where the Regeneration Academy is transforming a farm of more than 10,000 hectares through regenerative agriculture, education, and community resilience.

We speak with Jerónimo Romero, co-director of the academy, who reflects on the impact of this space where research, education, and regenerative farming practices meet.

La Junquera is more than just a farm, it is a living laboratory where solutions are tested, and learning is shared.

"Regenerative agriculture is not a formula. What works here may not work elsewhere: context matters," Jerónimo explains.

Water plays a central role. In a semi-arid territory, ponds, filtration, and crop diversification are key to retaining moisture and creating more resilient ecosystems.

"In our context, regeneration also means caring for water," he stresses.

But the vision goes further: together with farmers, residents, and municipalities, La Junquera is leading a 30-year restoration plan for the Quípar Valley.

"It's a collective effort, with many actors involved. The goal is for the project to outlast those of us here today and have a real impact on the landscape."

The episode also shows how the academy attracts younger generations while connecting experienced farmers with young people eager to innovate. Horizontal exchange is central to their methodology: what is taught is validated in practice and shared within the community.

This is how we close the first season of Rooted to Earth: with a clear message. Regeneration is not only about soil or crops, but about community, continuity, and a shared future.
